Photoshop Actions

I am sure, like me, many of you spend hours and hours sitting at Photoshop carrying out the same repetitive tasks on countless photographs, be it resizing, converting formats or applying the same color tweaks to a large batch. Well you may or may not have heard of Photoshop Actions, an often under used little gem hidden away in the Windows section of the main Photoshop menu. When activated it will appear amongst the pallets section, generally on the right hand side of the Photoshop window.
So what does it do? Well put simply, when activated it records the inputs that you are making to your image and saves them, allowing you automatically apply the same inputs to further images. The actions are very flexible, you can create an action to carry out a simple repetitive task in the middle of more complicated manipulation or you can create one to carry out all the operations in one fell swoop and then rename the image and change it’s format.
I will give you a very simple example one how to create an action and then run it on a batch of images. In this action we will open a JPG file, resize it suitable for web and save it as a PNG file.
First open a JPG of your choice. If the actions palette is not already open, open it from the Photoshop menu WINDOW – ACTIONS.

The actions palette should now be visible on the right side of the Photoshop screen. If you have not used actions before you will see a folder called default actions at the top. This is a set of actions provided with photoshop.
You can create your own library of actions and assign them to different folders called sets. Lets create a new set called My Actions. Click the new set icon on the bottom of the actions palette and enter the name.

Now select that set in the main window and click the create new action icon at the bottom. Give your action a name, in this case Web Size.

With your image open and the Web Size action selected click the record button. We are now recording our Photoshop moves. From the Photoshop menu, select IMAGE – IMAGE SIZE. Set the resolution to 72 pixels per inch and make sure Constrain Proportions is checked. Enter a new height or width size, in our case a width of 800 pixels. Click ok when everything is set.
Now we will save the image so click FILE – SAVE AS rename the file as required and select PNG from the File Type drop down. Click SAVE.

This next bit is important, we will now close the image from FILE – CLOSE. If you do not do this, when you are running a batch of images, they will all remain open, slowing down your computer.
With the actions finished, we must now stop the recording. Click the square box next to the record icon, you action is now saved.
We can run the action two different ways, from Adobe Bridge where you can define which images to batch or from inside Photoshop itself where you can batch an entire folder of images. We will do the latter.
From the Photoshop menu, select FILE – AUTOMATE – BATCH. At the top you will see the Set drop down menu, choose MY ACTIONS. You can now select the WEB SIZE action from the next drop down. For source select FOLDER and from the CHOOSE icon select the folder of images you wish to batch.

Under DESTINATION, select FOLDER and choose a suitable folder to send the images to.
Check the “Override Action Save As Command” tick box
Next you have options for renaming, I usually create a new name using the Document dropdown box then add a 2 or 3 digit sequence number in the next drop down, finally in the third dropdown select extension. Set your serial number to 1 and click ok.
You will now see your images wiz past in Photoshop as the program applies the action and saves the file and you can make a cup of tea and put your feet up knowing you have saved hours of work.
As mentioned this is a very simple example but with a little practice you will find yourself creating more advanced actions and drinking more tea.

Beginners Photography Class - January 2012

The first "Beginners Photography Class" of 2012 started off with a bang with a full class of 10 students. Two days of instruction and homework helped provide amateur and hobbyist photographers, learn more about their equipment and photography basics and theory. It is always a joy to see photographers of all levels, excited to learn more about photography and apply their newly learned knowledge to their photographic style. We hope for the next class to be as successful and look forward to seeing you all here at the next workshop at TYE.

Yesterday, Studio A and B were utilized to photograph and video former NBA player and currect CBS College Sports Coverage Analyst, Greg Anthony. The out of state production team spent the whole day doing green screen and portraits of Greg for an upcoming Coke Zero ad/promotion.
Studio mascot Lucy, had the pleasure of taking photos with Greg after the completion of the day.

UMC Triathlon

A few weeks back, we at TYE Studios, had the pleasure to be hired by UMC Triathlon Bahamas to photograph their first annual Triathlon in Nassau. With our staff of in-house photographers, we took a short weekend trip to Nassau and came back with some amazing photos of the Adults and children's divisions. The weekend was a washout to say the least, but the morning of the triathlon, we were all lucky to have seen the sunrise between the clouds. A double rainbow and no rain until after the event, the turnout was a success and we have the images to prove them. You can check out some of the photos on our Zenfolio site to see some of the footage of the triathlon. We hope to do it again next year and look forward to an even bigger turnout.

Canon U.S.A. Returns

Canon Imaging

Beginning of summer started off to a great start. Canon Imaging - Healthcare Technologies along with Agency 21 Kincaid, rented our complete studio for 5 days back in late June. With the high demand for more video services, TYE Studios is transforming their Studio B to be more friendly to our video clients. We have installed some basic acoustic treatment to help with the sound quality and reduce echo and rumble. We have already had The client Subway make use of the studio for their latest commercial, and they had been happy with their end result. Half day rental in studio and spokesperson Jared, were Here last Thursday to be the first to use the new updates to the studio. We hope for more video clients to make use of our studio in the coming weeks and will update you with more changes as the weeks come.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) here at TYE Studios

The studio has recently been getting a swarm of MMA fighters coming through the doors of TYE in the past few months. With in-house photographer, Jerico Supnet, the fighters are doing their stills for their upcoming fights and personal bios, along with some in-house video work.

We had our second music series held at the studio recently, along with the "WRAP UP PARTY" with the Film Production of "SLEEP - The Film", that was filmed in the nature preserve back in March of this year. The night was fun filled with food, guests, good times and some good ol' "blues" music from the band.

With a crew and cast of close to 20 people, the film was a blast to organize and shoot with perfect weather and full moonlight to light the nature paths late in the evenings where most of the shooting was done.

Musicians and Artists Alike - Welcome!!!

Last night, Photographer Michael Hansen, did a photoshoot of some upcoming musicians here at TYE Studios. With a new label around the horizon, they choose TYE and it's house photographer to be their center for still/motion imagery. Along with a full production team of assistants and TYE Studios, Tony Lai as the Digital Technician, the client and art director were able to preview images wirelessly (without thumbnail and full 100% preview) using their IPHONE and IPADS from across the room and throughout the studio. Stay tuned for final edits of the shoot, but in the meantime, enjoy the behind the scenes.

Small Flashes - SOLD OUT...AGAIN

Last weekend, was another busy weekend here at TYE Studios. With location equipment rentals, to in-studio rentals for the weekend, we also had one of our most popular classes held in our Studio A with Instructor/Photographer Marcus King. Small Flashes with Big Results. The half day class reached its maximum occupancy (with backups waiting) weeks before the class date. With today's photographers all wanting to learn a bit more about artificial lighting in a portable package, the class is a "MUST" for photographers of every style. Quantum lighting, Canon Speedlights, Pocketwizard TTL transmitters, softboxes, grids, backdrops, booms, extension arms, superclamps, you name it, the class had it all. With multiple setups for photographers to put together and practice with, the day was eventful and informative with no one wanting to take any breaks including lunch.

"SLEEP" The Casting

Recently had the casting for one of the character roles in the latest film by Director/Producer Keary Cunningham of TYE Studios. His film "SLEEP" The Movie will be in production in the month of March and will be filmed majority at the nature preserve behind TYE Studios. Trailers will be released soon for the movie, but in the meantime, a Kickstarter program has been started for this film and donations can be made on the website along with more details of the film. Sunbounce Fever

Last weekend TYE Studios had the pleasure of hosting Canon USA here at the studio for the second time this year. Canon and their staff, hosted workshops regarding stills and their Canon Speedlites, and the use of HDDSLR video on their DSLR cameras. The turnout was a success and had participants come from all parts of the US to come to this event. Canon ended their 2010 workshops here at TYE Studios and we hope they come back again in 2011 for more instructional classes. We thank Canon USA and all those involved for a great weekend.

Canon Live Learning

With our CANON USA here at TYE Studios not longer than a few months ago, they return on Sunday, November 14th, 2010 to offer an all day workshop for Photographers and Videographers. Instructor, EOL Bob Davis will be hosting the "EXPLORING HD VIDEO with EOS WORKSHOP" and Instructor Jeff Greene will be leading the "CREATIVE LIGHTING with SPEEDLITES WORKSHOP". Both workshops begin at 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

November - December Calendar

Demo Days - "A Success"

With the weekend over, and cleanup finished from our event, we at TYE Studios can confirm that our Canon | Broncolor Event was a great SUCCESS. We wanted to thank everyone who came to support the event and make it what it was, "a once in a lifetime event" for the photographers here in South Florida. We hope to continue similar events in the coming future and make TYE Studios and South Florida a photography destination for learning and education.

Sensor Cleaning - Southern Photo Technical Service

Just found out today, that for this coming Friday ONLY, Southern Photo Technical Service will be cleaning DSLR sensors on the spot for a small minor fee. For those photographers who don't dare touch their own sensors or don't have the time to travel to get their sensors cleaned from dust and dirt, you can bring your DSLR camera to the studio , starting at 3 p.m. and have them professionally clean your sensor on the spot while you visit and participate at the studio for Canon/Broncolor Demo Day(s).

Demo Days - Weekend Outline

With less than 2 weeks away, and an RSVP list that continues to grow with each day, the final preparations are being made and I now can post the outline for the Canon/Broncolor event. We look forward to everyone attending both of the days, but personally I believe our headline workshop/demo would have to be on Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Canon will be sending their HDSLR Videographer Representative to discuss the technology and future of video in a compact form. As more clients (i.e. weddings, commercials, blogs, etc.) are requesting video for their company/products/services, HDSLR is the smallest form factor to produce Professional High Definition Video at a fraction of the cost. And as a still photographer on location, you will be able to provide both stills and video for your projects/clients without carrying another camera system just for video.
And with majority of the latest cameras (and lenses being made for HDSLR video) in today's market having the ability to do 720 or 1080 video, I would find attending the video workshop/demo a highpoint of our weekend to learn and play around with the HD video features in today's HDSLR.

The emails are sent, meetings finalized, and the outline is almost complete. Hopefully by early next week, I will be able to post the two-day course outline for our first ever Demo Day(s) here at TYE Studios. The days of September 24 and 25th, Canon and Broncolor will be demoing their latest equipment for everyone interested in stopping by. We will have a curriculum of activities and shooting scenarios for photographers to test out the equipment. With Canon having their first ever Canon Expo this weekend, we can hope and expect most (if not all) of the newly released lenses, bodies, and accessories that they will be exhibiting at the Expo and Photokina later in the month. We are all excited to see what the future of Canon DSLR technology and Broncolor Lighting and Grip has to offer, and hope to see you all at our event.

Mamiya RZ33 - Capture Integration Workshop

Just a little update on the Capture Integration Workshop scheduled for September 29, 2010 here at TYE Studios. As of last week, we have a confirmed 35 guests signed up to attend this event. With the latest and greatest photographic toys in today's industry that will be presented and demoed, it is a no-brainer why photographers from every genre and across the state are attending this event.
It was just this weekend when I discovered in a forum, that Sales Manager for Capture Integration, Chris Snipes, was discussing the demonstration of the new Mamiya RZ33 with rotatable back. They will be demoing the RZ33 and the DF645 at the workshop via tethered and wirelessly transferring the previews to the Apple IPAD. It is a new workflow for today's clientele, where the client and art director can relax, sit, and watch the entire photo session unfold in a remote room with wifi access.
We look forward to the Mamiya demo along with other high-end equipment/software to be presented on our September 29th Workshop. We hope you can reserve your spot for the day event and we look forward to seeing you here at TYE.

With August a few days away, September is not to far around the corner. We at TYE Studios have a great lineup of events and workshops in the months to come. One of upcoming seminars is by Capture Integration on September 29, 2010. The event is an all day event starting at 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and they will be discussing their Capture One Software along with "HANDS ON" experience of on today's latest and greatest photographic tools for the gear head enthusiasts.

From Phase One 60mp digital backs, to color calibrated EIZO monitors, various data backup solutions, and a line of cameras and lenses for your hearts pleasure to see, touch, and ask questions about.

ARRI - Alexa

Last Saturday, TYE Studios visited ARRI for their in-house event of their new ALEXA camera. For those who are unfamiliar to the video world and the camera, ALEXA is ARRI's latest 3.5k camera to hit the market. With HDSLR and the RED camera taking over the video world, ARRI released their digital version to add to the competition. Aside from attending the event, we are now one step closer to finalizing our collaboration with ARRI and look forward to having a bright future together.
TYE Studios would be one of a very limited few rental studios that will offer high-end strobe lighting for photographers, and continuous lights for videographers, for in-studio and location rental. We are excited on whats to come next.

Work in Progress - ARRI Group

Some exciting news coming our way in the weeks to come. Currently we are in the talks with ARRI Group ("the world’s largest manufacturer and distributor of motion picture camera, digital intermediate and lighting equipment"). With the birth of the HDSLR, a new type of photographer/videographer has risen in the industry of still and motion. With the growing demand for both still and video from Clients, we at TYE Studios are planning to add ARRI Lighting and Grip to our rental program for in-studio and location use. We will continue to post updates on our progress as the deal comes to a close. We at TYE, are excited for the future of photography and welcome the HDSLR world of video to our studio.

New Equipment - By Zacuto

Yesterday we recently added a new item to our rental list of equipment for in-studio or location. The new Zacuto Z-Finder with Gorilla plate. With new upcoming cameras with built in HD video capability from Canon and Nikon, photographers have been slowly moving into the video realm with little to no additional investment. However, for those who already own a capable HDSLR camera, viewing/capturing video footage off the LCD screen is difficult to focus when you broad daylight or when the depth of field is thin. So that's where the Zacuto Z-Finder fits in, helping videographers critically focus when the subject/camera moves.
If you are interested in taking video with your HDSLR and want to take the Z-Finder for a spin, you can now rent it here at TYE Studios.

Fine Art Weekend

Last weekend was Fine Art at it's best. Two days of instruction, critique and photoshop, and one full day of shooting instudio and outside in the summer heat in our very own nature preserve. We had head instructor/commercial photographer, Peter Langone lead the group, along with commercial photographer, Marcus King for our post production portion of the workshop. The results of the class were amazing to say the least, and we look forward to future workshops with the two instructors in the coming months.

With Memorial Weekend over, the official start of Summer 2010 is here. We at TYE Studios had the honor and privilege to have one of the original "HEAVY METAL" bands, IRON MAIDEN, come to our studio on Sunday and shoot their latest upcoming album cover and tour images. Most of the images were shot on a massive green screen backdrop in Studio A, and on top of 3 stages that we constructed earlier that morning.

The photographer flew in from the U.K. last Friday, to photograph the band. John McMurtrie is a music, stage, and tour photographer who has shot some legendary bands/artists in his career. On his comp card you will see photos he has taken of Ozzy Osbourne, Slash, Green Day, Dave Grohl, Linkin Park, Metallica, Tom Morello and more, for covers of today's top music magazines. Earlier this month, TYE Studios, had our first ever "HANDS ON" novice workshop to Wedding Photography. The workshop was held at Calvary Chapel and was a full simulation wedding with Bride, Groom, flower girl, best man, bridal party, etc. at hand. From its first introduction, the workshop was SOLD OUT weeks before the event. After seeing and hearing everyones' responses/interests to the workshop, you can rest assured that we will sponsor another workshop similar to the one held on May 18, 2010.

Back late 2009, VH1 did an episode of their latest reality show, "TRANSform ME, here in Fort Lauderdale with their guest Christina. In their visit to Fort Lauderdale, they contacted TYE Studios to do portion of their episode here with one of our house photographers, Julius Gregorio. Earlier this month, Photographer and Director, Scott St. John, along with Videographer, Eddie Rodriguez, rented TYE Studios for their client, BEAUTY SCHOOLS OF AMERICA. BSA (Beauty Schools of America) had the agenda to shoot their latest promotional work here at the studio and with the help of two photography assistants, digital tech, and close to a dozen hair and makeup artists on set, and over a dozen+ models, the shoot was a success and completed before the full day's end.

Canine Portrait Workshop

Last saturday, TYE Studios, hosted their first ever Canine Portrait Workshop. We had the pleasure of having four canines as our models and TOP DOG photographer Bob Rosinsky, as the instructor for our canine shoot. Bob not only does pet photography, but he also offers services in Fine Art Reproduction, Printing, Retouching and Restoration to name a few.

AD - Head and Shoulders

Last Tuesday, March 30th, TYE Studios was proud to welcome Celebrity/Singer, THALIA to the studio. RED CREEK PRODUCTIONS, along with Creative Agency, DEL CAMPO / NAZCA SAATCHI & SAATCHI, were assigned to work with Thalia for a campaign ad for HEAD AND SHOULDERS South America. The studio hosted the shoot, where a team of 15 gathered to create one image to be used for Thalia's ad for Head and Shoulders.
With a lighting setup of 9 Profoto lights, flags and reflectors, the image was captured with Hasselblad's H3d II with a 50 megapixel digital back and 120mm Macro lens. The final product will be edited in Adobe Photoshop and the single image will be a composition of 4-6 images. We look forward to seeing the final result within a months time, and will post the image here on the blog as soon as we receive it.

Happy New Year from the staff at TYE Studios. 2010 is here and the year is already looking bright. Closing our year out in 2009, we had returning clients "KODAK" use our Studio B for another multi-day shoot. And to add to our growing client list, "DELL COMPUTERS", rented our Studio A to shoot several of their upcoming laptops and printers for 2010, along with ranked 16 in the world, tennis star, DOMINIKA CIBULKOVA. The past two months have kept TYE Studios busy with new and returning clients renting the studio for their work needs. From studio space rental to digital/equipment rental for location, TYE Studios can finally say that "Season is finally here". Just over the past month alone, Clients from VH1 to KODAK have used the studio for photography and video purposes. Additionally, more and more equipment rentals are being requested as photographers take their work on location. The future looks bright and cannot wait to see what the month of November|December have to offer.
And for those photographers who are looking to rent a studio and do not know of our 2009 promotion, we are offering our Studio B at a rate of $50.00/hour on Monday and Tuesdays only. Today was a busy day here at TYE as mentioned previously. Photographer, ANDRE ROWE, photographed 18 models (I think) from the Miami Caliente Lingerie Football League for their web content and promotion for this coming season. Videographer, KEARY CUNNINGHAM, and assistant, JIMMY, did the video and behind the scenes coverage of the shoot. I hope to get a sample video of the shoot in the days/weeks to come.
Additionally, TELEMUNDO TV and COMCAST, were here doing video coverage and interviews with the team players/coaches as well. It was a long and tiring day, but thanks to the hard work by all those involved, the shoot was a success and we can't wait to see the finalized images. And 11 hours after the shoot/selection of images, we can finally close the doors and call it a night here at TYE Studios. More to come soon.

As promised, below is a pic of the newly renovated Studio A @ TYE Studios. The image was composed of several wide angle shots, therefore scale is hard to determine in the image. But trust me when I say this, THE TWO WALLS LOOK MASSIVE. You have to take a trip to the studio to see it for yourself. Hope it helps with those wide angle lenses, photographers like to use in the studio.
Anyhow, tomorrow's a big day for the studio. Two classes in the morning and a big shoot in the studio with in-house photographer/partner ANDRE ROWE. Will fill you in with the details as the day passes. Hope to get some video done of the shoot as well.

Studio A - Re-Open for Business

Today TYE Studios is putting the final touches on the renovation project in our Studio A cycwalls. Both the white and black walls have been extended to our ceiling. The white cyc now offers "wide-angle" shooting capability with the extended 4 feet height, and the black cyc we added an additional 4 feet in length to the floor.
Studio A will be open for its first shoot this coming Saturday afternoon and will remain open until further notice. We will continue to make improvements in the larger studio in the coming weeks, but will not need any downtime as the changes will be additions with minimal construction, such as extension of our brick wall and a new addition of a graffiti wall for an "urban" look and additional shooting area.
We are excited to hear everyones comments on the new improvements and how they feel it will help on their shooting style and creativity. Please visit the studio for a tour on the new changes. I am sure you will like what you see.

Just a little behind the scenes from the lookbook of the SIX TWENTY SEVEN clothing line. The client flew in from New York and shot at TYE Studios for some product photography and then off to Fort Lauderdale Beach for their "fall/winter" lookbook. The images and theme for the book was a "cold" beach similar to L.A. winters. Moody, cloudy, and secluded.

STUDIO A - UPDATE

We are awaiting the completion of Studio A's "NEW LOOK" for 2009. The drywall has been placed, the electrical has been moved to the highest part of the wall, and painting of the white and black cyc-walls shall begin as early as tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully the painting process will only take a day or two the most.
Additionally, we also planned to strip the clear coat on the white cyc-wall and keep it just matte studio white paint. So for those who loved the reflective surface, will be disappointed on the new changes. However, for those (such as myself) who love flat paint throughout the cyc-wall, will be excited for its completion. It gives a clean appearance to the studio and personally, I just don't like gloss in most things (just my opinion).
Once the improvements are done, I hope to post new images of Studio A. Until then, keep checking back here for further updates.

|PHOTO| Update - Film Photoshoot

It's been a week since doing my first film photoshoot of the year. Sad to say, I had a bit of trouble development my E-6 220 film. The first photo lab I had gone too, CHROMATEK IMAGING, had stopped processing E-6 film completely and can only process black and white, or C-41. That is saddening to hear that the reality of film is coming to a dead end for some photo labs. Luckily there is more than one lab close to the studio that still processes medium format film. So I decided to pick up my non-processed film from Chromatek, and take it to DALE LABS. I picked it back up on Tuesday, scanned the images on Thursday and had the opportunity to edit one of my favorites that same day.

The image is a bit soft due to my Epson V700 flatbed scanner and problems of the film curling due to the poor film holders, but the image itself is exactly what I was looking for, for this beauty editorial. 4 different looks with a splash of color. I hope to have it submitted to a magazine, with the possibility of it being published in the months to come. Below is a sample of one of the E-6 shots that I recently took.

Film . Kodak E100G 220 film
Lighting . (3) Profoto pro heads, (2) beauty dishes with grids, (1) zoom reflector with 10 degree grid, (2) cutters

Hope to get another film shoot done sometime this week. Wish me luck.

We at TYE Studios would like to thank everyone who made it to Urs Recher's Workshop last Wednesday evening at the studio. The night was a success thanks to all those involved in putting it together. Urs' had provided a wealth of useful information ranging from the use of softboxes, the Para and HMI Lights to create movement and "emotion", and additional tricks such as grids and sequencing with long shutter speeds and "painting with light".
The evening overall was a day to remember. Thanks Urs and Broncolor for visiting TYE Studios.

Just decided to add a few images|polaroids from today's shoot at TYE Studios (after hours). Today I will be shooting medium format film for the first time this year (along with some digital). It has been close to over a year since my last film shoot. I am looking to go back to shooting film to add to my creativity and further my understanding of lighting. Digital might be the majority medium for most photographers of today, but film will never die in the arms of artist such as myself. Long live film!!!

Urs Recher - Broncolor

Urs Recher started his career in an advertising studio in Basel, Switzerland, before setting up his own studio in 1995. In 1998 Urs Recher joined Broncolor as head of the company's internal studio and technical adviser. Mr. Recher is responsible for all of Broncolor's internal advertising photography, product testing and development, as well as the company's worldwide workshop and seminar program.

URS Recher, a photographer and lighting expert for BRONCOLOR AG, AILSCHWIL, Switzerland, will be conducting a series of a 4 hour Fashion/Glamour seminars at TYE Studios on Wednesday, May 6, 2009. He will conduct both an Action/Fashion shooting as well as a Beauty/Glamour Shooting, separated by a lite snack.
